Welcome back to Church!

We ask for your patience and understanding after what seems like an age we are able to welcome you back to Mass, even in a limited way. We ask those returning to follow the guidelines which are in place to keep everyone safe. Hopefully in the coming weeks we will be able to relax these measures but it is important to follow the National guidelines as they are laid out. We will be asking you to observe the guidelines concerning social distancing, you will be asked to follow the one way system in the Cathedral and the faithful will receive Communion under one form, the host. Families and people living together will be able to sit together but we ask that every other bench is left clear in order to follow guidelines. The collection will take place as you leave Mass. Stewards will also be on duty to help you with any enquiries. The toilets will not be in use and we ask everyone to use the hand sanitiser.

As we have to clean the Church after every Mass we will only have one Mass per day apart from Sundays. We ask you to pray the rosary privately at home so we will not say it together after Mass as we have to keep the time we are together as short as possible. The Cathedral will be open for half an hour before and after Mass. We will have Mass at St Aidan’s on a Sunday at 9.45am but all weekday Masses will be celebrated at the Cathedral because of the live streaming for those who are continuing to shield.

We thank God for his strength and guidance during this difficult period and we remember all those who have died, those who are sick and those who have cared for them. Let us place our trust in the Lord as we move forward together.

PLEASE NOTE: When we have funerals the Mass will be reserved for members of the family as due to Covid restrictions we are limited to the number of people allowed. For funerals it is close members of the family and for weddings there is a maximum of 30 people allowed which includes the Priest and registrar.

Also there are guidelines we have to follow concerning the way funerals are carried out. We ask for peoples understanding and patience in regard to this as we embrace this transition period.

We will be able to have funerals in the Church but it is recommended that all other celebrations should be deferred to the autumn if at all possible. Please read the letter Bishop David sent to the priests concerning the reopening of our Churches.

Fr Mark once again asks for your understanding as we begin the gradual return to the normal programme. He is aware of people enquiries about Baptisms,   First Holy Communion and Confirmation but as you may be aware this will take a bit of time to organise.

It is wonderful to be able to open up and welcome you back to Mass but we still have to be careful and we will continue to review it. Let us hope and pray that we will emerge stronger from this difficult and painful time.

Bishop David’s Letter

The Reinstallation of Public Acts of Worship Announced by the Prime Minister on 23rd June 2020.

Naturally we welcome this news whilst also understanding the challenges it presents to many of you and your parish teams.

Firstly, there is no obligation on any of you to reinstate public acts of worship if your church buildings do not permit the safety regulations to be followed or you are in the shielded category for any reason. Please know that your safety is of paramount importance to me and I do not wish for you to be placed in a vulnerable position of any kind.

I would also remind you that the dispensation for not attending Sunday mass,
granted by the Bishops, is still in force so there is no obligation to your parishioners to attend a Sunday mass.

The diocesan task force for this pandemic met this morning to discuss the issues you will face, and any mitigating works required prior to reinstating public acts of worship. The relevant departments at Bishop’s House are working on a guidance document which will be sent to you in due course. This document will include marriages, baptisms, funerals as well as Masses.

As a general point any public act of worship that can be deferred until the autumn should be. We will be advocating a ‘soft reinstallation’ programme to begin with and it may be some time before we return to ‘normal’.

In the meantime, I would invite you to reflect on how this latest stage can be implemented in your parish and resist the desire to make public promises that you (and we) may not be able to keep.

✠ David

Bishop of Northampton

It is all about CAFOD’s ‘Summer of Hope’ and informs, inspires and encourages children, at a time when children may really need it. It is led by passionate youths and is a real must-watch! https://cafod.org.uk/News/Events/Summer-hope-assembly

CATHEDRAL LIVE STREAMING
All Masses at the Cathedral are streamed live on both our website and the diocesan website. Please see Mass times for further details.

Thank you for contacting us regarding the online streaming service, you may find this response helpful.
A great deal of time and effort has gone into providing and supporting this service which has been especially valuable during this current lock down situation, with many thousands of parishioners, near and far, benefiting from our  online services.
We have a technical team monitoring and managing the service, but there are many other factors that effect internet speeds and bandwidth which are unfortunately out of our control. This extreme demand is not just for our online streaming services of course, but right across all services on the Internet.
Due to these factors there will be occasions where there is a delay or buffering with the diocese service, for which we apologise, but this is unfortunately out of our control.
If this does happen please do not ‘refresh’ the page straight away, as this in fact just places additional load on the servers. Usually, within a few seconds the service will resume.
Please be assured that we are constantly striving to provide everyone with the best service possible in these difficult times.
